The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung
(KAS) is one of the political foundations of the Federal Republic of Germany.
With its international activities and projects, the KAS realises a substantial
contribution to international co-operation and understanding. It is named
after the first Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Konrad
Adenauer.
Here we present the Regional Programme of the KAS in Southeast Asia. It focuses on three key areas, namely Political Dialogue, Media Development and the Rule of Law.
As far as the political programme is concerned, it promotes regional democratisation, decentralisation and the consolidation of civil society in order to strengthen political, economic and social stability in the region. In detail we concentrate on:
- Meetings among representatives from leading think tanks from Europe and ASEAN+3;
- Dialogues among representatives from political parties, academic institutions and NGOs such as the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP), Conferences of the Asian Political & International Studies Association (APISA) and the ASEAN People’s Assembly (APA);
- Conferences for representatives of the East and Southeast Asia Network for Better Local Government (ESEA).
The KAS media activities aim to promote a free, responsible and ethical press in the region. This is achieved by intensifying the dialogue amongst leading journalists in Southeast Asia through regional conferences and meetings as well as through training activities for journalists in the region. The KAS media programme consists of the following key initiatives:
- The promotion of Asia News Network (ANN) that brings together the leading English language newspapers, their editors and/or publishers in Asia, to share knowledge and exchange news and views;
- The co-operation with the Council of Asian Press Institutes (CAPI). This Apex organisation comprises press institutes from ten Asian countries and aims to set standards for responsible journalism;
- The founding and supporting of the Konrad-Adenauer Center for Journalism at the Ateneo de Manila University in the Philippines. Besides regular studies of journalism, the centre also provides online courses for the training of journalists including an online Master of Journalism degree programme as a distance learning course.
As far as the KAS legal activities are con¬cerned, they aim to promote the rule of law development within the ASEAN+3 Re¬gion through regional seminars, research and training activities. The KAS legal pro¬gramme consists of the following key initiatives:
- Annual conferences of Asian Constitutional Court Judges and Justices;
- Regular colloquia for representatives of human rights organisations and anti- corruption agencies;
- Roundtables for experts from legal institutions such as the drafters of the ASEAN Charter.
We organise and sponsor about 30 international conferences and seminars around the ASEAN+3 Region annually. Furthermore, we produce several publications and a regional journal called “Panorama: Insights into Southeast Asian and European Affairs”. Our areas of interest include the promotion of democracy, press freedom, East Asia-Europe relations, the rule of law, political participation, economic development, better local governance and political party dialogues.
