  Seventh Asian-European Editors’ Forum:
India - China – Japan: The New Power-Triangle in Asia
  05 – 08 October 2006, Singapore
 

The Seventh Asian-European Editors’ Forum will serve as a platform for discussions among leading Asian and European journalists, mainly Editors-in-Chief, from major newspapers from both continents. Once more organized by the Media Programme Asia of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) in Singapore, the Forum examines the impact of the rise of China and India on the international politics of Asia and the world. The Republic of Singapore’s Prime Minister, His Excellency Lee Hsien Loong, has been invited to inaugurate this year’s forum with a keynote speech on ‘Singapore’s Role in View of the New Powers to Be in Asia’, followed by a Q&A session. Past guest speakers include Indonesia’s President, His Excellency Dr Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (2005), and Thailand’s Prime Minister, His Excellency Dr Thaksin Shinawatra (2004). As in previous years, invited high profile speakers include leading academics, CEOs, and editors.

  ASEAN Roundtable 2006 - Revisiting the Bali Concord II

  Whither the Philippines in the 21st Century
  13 – 14 July 2006, Singapore
 

The conference will examine topics such as the presidency and political parties; constitutional change and federalism; the roles of the military, religion, and the media in politics; macroeconomic developments; the investment climate and business opportunities; poverty, unemployment, and income inequality; demographic trends and migration; and the Philippine development record. Capping the conference will be an interactive discussion by a panel of experts on the outlook and trajectories of the country.

  Maritime Piracy in South-East Asia
  13 – 15 July 2006, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
 

Over the past decades Southeast Asia has seen a new resurgence in maritime piracy. Reported pirate attacks have more than tripled over the past decade while over 35% of the reported attacks in 2005 occurred in Southeast Asian waters. Hosted by the Media Programme Asia of the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation (KAS) in Singapore, this workshop will bring together journalists and maritime experts to discuss various topics related to piracy such as its’ social causes as well as its’ often declared possible relation to maritime terrorism. The focus will be placed on the problems and challenges that journalists face when trying to objectively report on the topic.

  Brainstorming on ASEAN Charter
  17 – 18 March Singapore; 17 – 19 April Ubud; 25 – 29 September Brüssel & Berlin
 

KAS is the first European partner to support initiatives in developing a Charter for the ASEAN Community. The Foundation has recently supported two brainstorming sessions of the ASEAN-ISIS Network in Singapore and Ubud, who are involved in the drafting process. The ASEAN Institutes for Strategic and International Studies have been invited to make recommendations concerning the Asean charter to The Eminent Persons Group (EPG). KAS will bring together the Asian drafters with their European counterparts in Berlin and Brussels in September so as to enable an exchange of their experiences.

  The Challenge of Law in Asia: from Globalization to Regionalization?
  25 - 26 May, 2006, Shanghai, China
 

The 3rd Asian Law Institute (ASLI) annual conference will be held in the Faculty of Law, East China University of Politics and Law in Shanghai/China. The theme explored is "The Development of Law in Asia: Convergence versus Divergence?”, and the conference will touch on several wide-ranging issues and sub-themes regarding regional legal issues in Asia. Topics range from, inter alia, International Law and International Human Rights; WTO and Regional Cooperation; Jurisprudence and Higher Education of Law; Dispute Resolution; IP and E-Commerce; Environment Protection and Natural Resources Issues. Legal experts from Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam and Germany will be sponsored by Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung to participate and to share their insights on the topics.

  13th ASEAN-ISIS Colloquium on Human Rights (AICOHR)

The 13th ASEAN-ISIS Colloquium of Human Rights (AICOHR) will be held from 15 - 16 May 2006 in Manila on the theme of "Human Rights Promotion in the ASEAN Security Community”. The participants from East, South and Southeast Asia will be assessing the state of human rights in the Region with special focus, among others, on human rights as an integral part of political development and on the political, economic and social challenges to human rights promotion in the ASEAN Security Community.

  Asia News Network Annual Meeting

This year’s annual meeting of the Asia News Network (ANN) is held in Kolkata, organized by the ANN, the Media Programme Asia of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) in Singapore and hosted by India’s ANN member, the Statesman.

The ANN is a network of 14 leading, predominantly English-language, national Asian daily newspapers in 12 Asian countries, with a combined circulation of 14 million and a readership of more than 50 million. Since February, 10 2006 ANN publishes AsiaNews, a weekly regional news magazine reflecting Asian perspectives in the fast growing and most diversed region ot the world.   Workshop Reporting Conflict: Analyzing, Writing, Surviving

Journalists covering crisis in this time of conflicts all over the region would benefit from this workshop. The emphasis is on how to analyze the conflict, write about it subjectively and survive - during the coverage as well as after having the article published about the theme. Participants for this workshop are coming from countries with crisis areas such as India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka. After this workshop, they are expected to act as multiplicators and pass on the newly acquired knowledge and experiences to their colleagues.

  Anti-Corruption Workshop 2005:
Tackling Corruption within Law Enforcement Agencies
– From Prevention to Prosecution

In association with the Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA) and the Vietnamese Government Inspectorate, this year’s workshop looks at the threat of corruption to law enforcement in various countries in the region, their experiences in corruption prevention, diagnosis and investigation. It will also facilitate information exchange between anti-corruption agencies, to highlight the pitfalls and underline the imperatives in the fight against corruption.

  Growing Integration of the Greater Mekong
Sub-regional ASEAN States in Asian Region
  19 - 22 September 2005, Yangon, Myanmar
 

The workshop is organised in collaboration with the Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies (MISIS). It will discuss the many aspects of regional integration of ASEAN states in the Greater Mekong sub-region, particularly Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam. Among others, it will discuss the roles and relationships of Major Asian Powers and the Greater Mekong Sub-Regional ASEAN States. Furthermore the Integration of Greater Mekong Sub-Regional ASEAN States in the Southeast and East Asian Context with reference to the security, economic and socio-cultural spheres. It shall also focus on the Greater Mekong Sub-Regional ASEAN States in the Region, discussing the issues, possibilities and challenges they face as cooperation and integration grows.

  The Role of the Media in Strengthening Muslim- non-Muslim Relations

At a time when images and events suggest a clash of the Muslim with the non-Muslim world, the media carries an accrued responsibility to report events objectively in ways that defuse rather than ignite religious and ethnic tensions. In this timely seminar, six speakers and six commentators - all leading academics, activists, authors, editors, and journalists - will be discussing the media’s role in fostering inter-faith dialogue and in strengthening inter-religious relations between Muslims and non-Muslims.
The seminar is organized by the Singapore-based Centre for Research on Islamic and Malay Affairs (RIMA), with the assistance and support of the Media Programme Asia of the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation (KAS).

  Politics in Transition Period and the Role of the Media

Hosted by the Press Institute of Mongolia (PIM) and supported by the Asia Media Programme of the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation (KAS) in Singapore, this international conference brings together media practitioners, politicians, academics, and NGO-members to discuss issues relating to the role of the media in transition-era politics. In three sessions, the 18 participants from 6 Asian countries will be discussing topics relating to ‘Media, Elections, and Political Parties’, ‘The Media’s Role in Society’, and ‘Communication between Journalists and Politicians’.

The Press Institute of Mongolia is a member of the KAS-supported Council of Asian Press Institutes (CAPI). This umbrella organization of 10 Asian press institutes promotes and develops professional journalism in the region through a newsletter, vocational training seminars, conferences, and the sharing of technical and human resources.

  9th National Press Forum and 2005 PPI-KAF Community Press Awards
  21 - 22 April 2005, Manila, The Philippines
  This forum and the following annual Community Press Awards, the first and only awards programme of its kind in the Philippines, are the result of cooperation between the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation (KAF) and the Philippine Press Institute (PPI). Launched in 1996, it is aimed at raising the standards for responsible journalism in the countryside. It seeks to honour news organisations not only for excellence in reportage, editorial content and overall design but also for their roles in their respective communities as development catalysts and chroniclers of events. As in the past years, awards will be presented to journalists from the Philippines chosen by the Board of Judges in the following categories: environmental/science reporting, business and economic reporting, editorial page, photo journalism and newspaper design.

  Religions on the Edge: Issues and Challenges in Reporting about Faiths and Conflict
